Kashmir is India's most underbooked holiday. Over 21 million people visited in 2024. New direct flights from Bangalore, Kolkata and Hyderabad launched in 2025. No permits required for Indian citizens. And yet most people who could go this year are still saying "someday." If you are reading this, you are already past that. Good.
Travel Junky has planned Kashmir trips for hundreds of Indian families, couples, and groups. This page tells you what you need to know to book the right trip destinations, costs, packages, and exactly what to expect.
Ready to book now? Call us or visit traveljunky. in. We send a full itinerary and price within 24 hours.
Kashmir is not a hill station. Shimla and Mussoorie are hill stations. Kashmir is a full destination that takes 6 to 8 days to see properly and leaves most people wanting more time.
Dal Lake, Srinagar: 18 sq km of water with over 1,000 houseboats, a floating vegetable market before sunrise, and Mughal gardens on the shore. No other lake in India has this.
Gulmarg: Asia's highest cable car, rising to 3,979m. On a clear day, Nanga Parbat (8,126m) is visible on the horizon. The same meadow becomes one of Asia's best ski destinations in December.
Pahalgam: Three separate valleys (Betaab, Aru, Baisaran), pine forests, the Lidder River, and the best trekking base in Kashmir. No road reaches Baisaran: pony only.
Sonamarg: The Thajiwas Glacier is a 4 km walk from town. The drive continues to Zoji La Pass and Ladakh. Raw, exposed, different from everything else on the circuit.
Food: Wazwan feast, Rogan Josh, Tabak Maaz, Kahwa. A cuisine unlike anything else in India, built on slow cooking and spices found nowhere else.
Autumn colour: October chinar trees in Srinagar's gardens are one of the most photographed natural events in India. The saffron fields of Pampore bloom for two weeks in mid-October.
Skiing: Gulmarg gets 3-5m of powder from December to March. Lessons and gear on site. One of the most accessible and affordable ski trips available from India.
The Gulmarg gondola sells out. In April and May, tickets are gone by 9am. Travel Junky pre-books this before you land. You walk straight to the gondola. No queue. No missed ride. Many DIY travellers drive 3 hours to Gulmarg and cannot get on.
Good Dal Lake houseboats disappear months in advance. The hand-carved walnut interiors, private decks, and proper kahwa service; those properties book out early. Travel Junky reserves the right to.
Mountain weather changes fast. When it does, you need a driver and operator who can adjust the day in real time. Without pre-arranged support, you are sorting it out alone in a valley with no signal.
The floating vegetable market runs from 5 am to 7 am. Most hotels and tourism websites do not mention it. Travel Junky puts you on a shikara at 5 am as standard. That is the kind of local knowledge that makes the difference between a trip you talk about for years and one you mostly remember for the hotel breakfast.
Every Travel Junky Kashmir package includes:
Yes, for the standard tourist circuit.
Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are fully operational for tourists. 21 million+ visitors in 2024. The gondola is running. Dal Lake houseboats are booked out. Families are in the meadows every day of the season.
Read the news before you travel, as you would for any destination. Travel Junky has contacts on the ground in Kashmir throughout every trip. If adjustments are needed, we handle them immediately.
Indian citizens need no special permits for any standard tourist area.
2 nights recommended | Best for: first-time visitors, couples, culture travellers
Srinagar is where every Kashmir trip starts. It is also the most frequently underestimated stop; most people give it one night and regret not giving it two. Dal Lake is the main draw. A shikara ride at 5 am to the floating vegetable market, where farmers trade from boats in the mist before sunrise, is consistently what Travel Junky guests say they remember most. The lake at sunset, with the Pir Panjal mountains reflected in still water, is a photograph that does not need a filter.
A houseboat stay is not optional in a proper Kashmir trip. The carved walnut interiors, private lake-facing deck, kahwa brought to you without asking, it is an experience that exists only here. Travel Junky books the right houseboats. Not the ones left over after everyone else's books.
The Mughal Gardens Shalimar Bagh (1619), Nishat Bagh (1633), and Chashme Shahi, line the eastern lake shore. In October, when the chinar trees turn red and amber, these gardens are extraordinary. In spring and summer, they are very good.
The Old City Jamia Masjid (built 1394, entirely from Kashmiri wood), the Shah Hamdan Mosque on the Jhelum, and the lanes of Nowhatta. One unhurried morning is worth more here than a rushed hour.
Shopping at the Government Arts Emporium on Boulevard Road for certified Pashmina, Kashmiri saffron, and walnut wood carving. Not from shikara drivers or street sellers. The emporium. That is all.
1-2 nights recommended | Best for: couples, adventure travellers, winter/ski trips
51 km from Srinagar. 2 hours by road.
At 2,650 metres, Gulmarg is where the air changes and the scale of the Himalayas becomes real rather than abstract. The meadow in summer is wide and green. In winter it is under three metres of snow.
The Gulmarg Gondola is Asia's highest cable car. Two phases: Phase 1 to Kongdoori (3,099m), Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (3,979m). At the top, Nanga Parbat 8,126m, ninth highest mountain in the world is visible on the northern horizon. The entire Kashmir Valley spreads out below you to the south.
This gondola has a daily capacity limit. Travel Junky books it before you land. In peak season (April-May), tickets are gone by 9 am. This is not a risk worth taking.
Skiing (December to March): 3-5 metres of powder. Slopes from beginner to advanced. All gear and lessons on site. Beginner 3-hour group lesson with equipment: ₹1,500-2,500. Heli-skiing available for advanced skiers. One of the best-value ski trips in Asia, accessible by a 1.5-hour flight from Delhi.
Other Gulmarg activities: Horse riding through the meadow, golf on one of the world's highest courses, trekking through pine forest above town.
2 nights recommended | Best for: families, nature lovers, trekkers
95 km from Srinagar. 3 hours by road. Pahalgam is where the trip slows down. Three separate valleys to explore, all different, none requiring you to rush.
Betaab Valley is named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot here entirely. Wide meadow, Lidder River running cold and fast through pine and fir forest, mountains surrounding it. Entry fee: ₹30 per person.
Aru Valley is 12 km from Pahalgam town. Quieter than Betaab. Wider meadow. The best starting point for the Kolahoi Glacier Trek. Where serious trekkers base themselves.
Baisaran is 7 km from the town. No road access, pony ride (30 minutes each way, approximately ₹400-600 round trip) or on foot. A circular meadow surrounded by pine forest, snow peaks visible above the trees, no vehicles and no vendors. Consistently rated the highlight of the Pahalgam stay by Travel Junky guests.
Chandanwadi is the Amarnath Yatra starting point and a beautiful glacial valley in its own right. Cold, quiet, dramatic.
Trekking from Pahalgam: Kolahoi Glacier (3-4 days, beginner-friendly), Tarsar Marsar (6 days, twin glacial lakes), Great Lakes Trek (7-8 days, 5 high-altitude lakes at 3,500-4,000m, July-September only).
1-2 nights recommended | Best for: serious trekkers, people continuing to Ladakh, those wanting something raw
87 km northeast of Srinagar. 2.5 hours by road on the old Silk Route. Sonamarg is different from the other valleys in feel, not just location. More exposed. The mountains are steeper, the glacier closer, the landscape more unfinished. The Sindh River is louder here. The Thajiwas Glacier is a 4 km walk from town, walkable by anyone of reasonable fitness, no guide required.
Sonamarg is the last stop before Zoji La Pass (3,528m) and the road to Ladakh. If your trip continues to Kargil and Leh, this is where that drive begins.
Day treks from Sonamarg: Vishansar and Krishansar Lakes — two glacial lakes at 3,700m, one of the finest day treks in Kashmir. Possible in a long day, better as an overnight.
Sonamarg works best as an addition to the classic circuit for anyone with 7+ nights. It rounds out the trip rather than replacing anything.
Half-day or day trip | Best for: repeat visitors, travellers who want fewer crowds
Two valleys, 42-47 km from Srinagar, that almost no standard Kashmir tour package includes. Travel Junky adds them to extended itineraries.
Yusmarg: No cable car, no vendor rows, no tourist buses. A meadow under the Pir Panjal range. Quiet in a way, the main circuit is not.
Doodhpathri: "Valley of Milk", the stream is so cold and clear that it looks white. Wildflowers in summer, gold grass in October. Guests who see it consistently call it the trip's best surprise.
This is the question we get asked most often. Here is a direct answer for each type of traveller.

Shikara on Dal Lake at dawn: 5 am departure to the floating vegetable market. ₹300-500 per hour for a private shikara. Travel Junky arranges this as part of every Srinagar stay.
Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 + Phase 2. Book in advance. ₹800 (Phase 1) + ₹900 (Phase 2) per person approximate. Capacity-limited daily. Travel Junky pre-books as standard.
Baisaran by pony: ₹400-600 round trip per pony from Pahalgam. 30 minutes each way. No road access alternative.
Great Lakes Trek: -8 days, 75 km, 5 high-altitude lakes. July-September only. Guided, fully equipped. Physically demanding but no technical climbing required. Travel Junky arranges guides, camping, and permits.
Kolahoi Glacier Trek: 3-4 days from Pahalgam. Beginner-friendly. Good intro to Himalayan trekking.
Gulmarg Skiing: December to March. Beginner group lesson + equipment: ₹1,500-2,500. Slope passes: approximately ₹500-800/day. All rentable on site.
Pampore Saffron Fields: Mid-October only. Dawn visit when the crocus flowers open. Travel Junky adds this automatically for mid-October trips.
Kashmiri cuisine is unlike anything else in India. No tomato-onion base. Not spicy. Built on slow-cooked meat, fennel, dry ginger, and Kashmiri red chilli, which gives colour without heat. Order these:
Rogan Josh — slow-braised lamb, deep red colour, mellow flavour. The reference dish. Best in Srinagar: Mughal Darbar. Best in Pahalgam: ask your driver, not your hotel.
Tabak Maaz — lamb ribs, cooked in milk then fried in ghee. Crispy outside, falling apart inside. Order it everywhere you see it.
Yakhni — lamb in white yoghurt sauce with fennel and cardamom. Light, elegant, difficult to find well-made outside Kashmir. Order it when available.
Wazwan set — the full Kashmiri feast. At Ahdoos or Mughal Darbar in Srinagar, order the Wazwan set for the main dishes in one sitting.
Kahwa — saffron tea with cinnamon, cardamom, rose petals, almonds. Drink it every morning. Available at every houseboat and hotel.
Vegetarian options: Dum Aloo (baby potatoes in fennel-spiced yoghurt), Haak (Kashmiri leafy green), Rajma. All available and very good.
Best restaurants in Srinagar: Mughal Darbar (non-veg), Ahdoos (Wazwan), Chai Jaai (breakfast and kahwa), Shamyana (Tabak Maaz).
Buy from: Government Arts Emporium, Boulevard Road. Certified products, fixed prices, no pressure.
Do not buy from: Shikara drivers who stop at a shop, taxi drivers, street sellers near tourist sites. Commission-based, rarely authentic.
What is worth buying:

Pack layers, not just warm clothes. Srinagar in June is 24°C. Gulmarg, the same evening, is 8°C. Thermal base layer, fleece or light down jacket, waterproof outer layer year-round at altitude. Hat and gloves, October to March; bring them for May to July at Gulmarg anyway.
Winter trips: Heavy down jacket rated 0°C or below. Waterproof boots. Ski gear is rentable at Gulmarg; there's no need to bring it from home.
Download offline maps before each day's drive. The signal in Srinagar is fine. Gulmarg and Pahalgam towns are patchy. Baisaran and trekking trails are nothing.
Carry cash. ATMs in Srinagar are everywhere. Fewer in Gulmarg and Pahalgam towns. Pony guides, small dhabas, craft sellers, cash only. UPI is not accepted in most remote areas.
Documents: Aadhaar or passport for hotel check-in and some checkposts. Travel Junky 24/7 support number saved on your phone. Travel insurance for trekking and winter trips.
Altitude: The Gulmarg gondola to 3,979m and Sonamarg above 3,000m can cause headache and breathlessness in some people. Acclimatise slowly. Talk to your doctor about Diamox before trekking above 3,500m.
Culture: Covered head for women and shoes off for everyone at mosques. Do not photograph people without asking in Srinagar's old city; asking is almost always met with a yes.
Packages from ₹11,000 per person. Free customised quote in 24 hours.
