Who's Actually Writing This

Robin Negi runs our international desk at Junky Travels LLP, the company behind Travel Junky. He booked his first Dubai group in March 2019, eleven people from Ahmedabad, a wedding anniversary group, and the visa got stuck for nine extra days because one passport had a typo that the agent never caught. That trip is the reason we now triple-check every passport copy before submission and why we tell guests to send documents 10 days out instead of the standard 5-7.

Since then, it's been roughly 40-60 Dubai bookings a year through our desk. Not huge volume compared to the big portals, but enough that we've watched hotel categories drift, watched one of our two regular desert safari operators get worse and switch away from them in 2023, and watched the visa fee structure change at least three times.

THE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY MATTER

The Visa Number Nobody Quotes Straight

Every Dubai package site quotes a different visa price, and none of them explains why. Here's why, sourced directly from the GDRFA Dubai service catalogue rather than secondhand blog numbers.

GDRFA Dubai's published fee schedule (gdrfad.gov.ae) lists the 30-day single-entry visit visa at a government fee of AED 200, plus 5% VAT, plus a financial security deposit and collection fee (AED 1,000 deposit + AED 20 + AED 40 service fees in most categories), plus medical insurance (AED 40 for a 30-day visa). None of these line items is negotiable or agency-specific; they are fixed by GDRFA regardless of who processes your application. What varies between agencies is purely the service charge on top.

Add it together, and a 30-day tourist visa lands in the AED 350-550 range depending on processing speed and the agency's own service fee, roughly Rs 8,000-13,000 in 2026 rupee terms. We quote the full number, broken into these exact line items, on the first call. Not "visa from Rs 6,500" with three asterisks. If a Dubai tour package site is showing you a visa cost under Rs 7,000, ask them point blank what's excluded; it's almost always the insurance or the security deposit fee, added back in at checkout.

One thing that actually changes your number: if you're holding a valid UK, US, EU, or Australian residence visa, or a US green card, you qualify for visa-on-arrival at a lower cost than the full eVisa route. We had a guest in late 2025 who didn't mention his UK visa until we'd already started the eVisa paperwork, which saved him close to Rs 4,000 once we caught it. Tell us upfront if this applies to you.

Processing is genuinely 4-7 working days now. We still build in a 10-day buffer because document corrections (a blurry photo, a passport scan with glare) cost 2-3 days to redo and there's no fast-tracking a redo.

On overstaying: GDRFA's published penalty is AED 100 per day plus an AED 200 out-pass fee. We mention this not to alarm anyone, but because every guest should know the actual number rather than a rumour. It matters if a return flight gets delayed and you're cutting it close to your visa expiry.

What We've Actually Learned Running Dubai Trips Since 2019

On hotels: "4-star" means almost nothing as a filter in Dubai. We had a guest book a 4-star near Deira through a different agency in 2022, expecting something close to what a Marina 4-star looks like. It was a perfectly fine, clean, three-elevator building with a rooftop that was actually a parking structure. Not bad, just not what the star rating implied. Now we always tell guests: Deira 4-star and Marina 4-star are not the same product, even at similar price points.

On desert safaris, we used to run two operators in rotation. Dropped one in 2023 after back-to-back complaints about overcrowded convoys, a BBQ dinner clearly catered for 200 people reheated, and a tanoura performance cut short twice for "time." We kept the other one, an Arabian Adventures-affiliated camp operator (full operator details shared at booking, since not every camp uses the same trade name year to year). They cap convoy size, and the camp dinner is grilled on-site. Two years, zero complaints. When we switch operators, it's because something was genuinely wrong, not the margin.

On Burj Khalifa timing: sunset slots in December and January sell out 6-7 days ahead, sometimes faster around New Year. We had a family in December 2024 who waited until 3 days before their visit to confirm that only off-peak morning slots were left. We now lock the time slot the moment dates are confirmed, before the hotel and flights are even finalised.

On the metro vs taxi question, people always ask: the Dubai Metro (RTA-operated) covers the Burj Khalifa/Downtown and Marina circuits well. For the desert safari pickup or Abu Dhabi day trip, you need a car regardless. Budget 3-4 taxi rides across a 5-night trip and use the metro for the rest.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

We keep this simple, and it's the same regardless of package value:

• 30+ days before departure: Full refund minus visa processing costs already incurred (visa fees are non-refundable once submitted to GDRFA; this is a government rule, not ours).
• 15-29 days before departure: 50% refund of package cost, minus visa costs already incurred.
• Under 15 days before departure: No refund on package cost. Flight and hotel cancellation terms follow the airline/hotel's own policy, which we'll always show you at the time of booking, not after.
• Date changes: Free up to 20 days before departure, subject to flight and hotel availability on the new dates. Within 20 days, subject to airline/hotel change fees, which we pass through at cost, no markup from us.

How We Handle Your Documents

Booking a Dubai visa means we collect a passport scan and a photo. We store these only for the duration of visa processing plus the standard period required for any potential GDRFA query, then they're deleted from our active systems. We don't sell, share, or use this data for anything beyond your booking. Why a Proper Operator Still Matters for Dubai

Dubai is genuinely one of the easier international trips to book short flights, a fast visa, and English is widely spoken. People reasonably ask why not just book it themselves.

Here's the honest answer: you can. Where an operator earns their place is in the small decisions that compound picking the hotel area that matches what you actually want, knowing which desert safari operator hasn't had a complaint in two years versus one that has, locking Burj Khalifa slots before they sell out, and having someone to call if a flight gets delayed and your transfer driver is waiting at the wrong terminal (DXB has three terminals, and Emirates uses a different one from most other carriers this tripped up a guest in 2024 and we now confirm terminal in every transfer brief).

DUBAI'S ATTRACTIONS, WITH THE DETAIL THAT MATTERS

Burj Khalifa

828 metres, tallest building on Earth, observation decks at Level 124/125 and Level 148 (the highest observation deck in the world). Sunset slots cost more and sell out first; book 6-7 days ahead minimum in December-January. Level 148 adds a faster elevator and a noticeably quieter deck. For most guests, Level 124/125 at sunset gives 90% of the experience at a meaningfully lower price.

Dubai Mall and the Fountain Show

Connected to Burj Khalifa by an indoor walkway. The fountain show runs every 30 minutes in the evening. We tell guests to go for 8 pm or 9 pm, not the first slot. Same choreography, noticeably thinner crowd after 8:30 pm. The best photo spot is the Burj Khalifa Lake Terrace, not directly in front of the fountain.

Desert Safari

Standard inclusions: dune bashing, sandboarding, camel ride, BBQ camp dinner, cultural show. Convoy size and pickup timing separate a good one from a mediocre one. Afternoon pickup (3:30-4 pm) means dune bashing in good light and arriving at camp for actual sunset. Late pickups mean dune bashing in fading light, sold as the identical package. We only book the afternoon slot.

Dhow Cruise

Marina for the glass-skyline photo most first-timers want. Dubai Creek for the older, quieter version, Gold Souk waterfront, abra boats, less crowded.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Abu Dhabi, 1.5 hrs from Dubai)

One of the largest mosques in the world. The dress code strictly enforced full abaya and headscarf for women (provided free at entry), full-length sleeves and trousers for men. We brief every guest on this before the day trip.

Al Fahidi, Gold Souk, Spice Souk

Al Fahidi (formerly Al Bastakiya) is Dubai's oldest neighbourhood. Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira are walkable from each other along the creek. Gold is sold by weight near international rates, plus making charges are meaningfully cheaper than equivalent jewellery in most Indian cities.

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis

The largest man-made island in the world, shaped like a palm tree. The monorail gives skyline views without needing a car. Atlantis's Aquaventure Waterpark and Lost Chambers Aquarium are open to day visitors.
