Introduction
North Bali feels different from the rest of the island. No loud beach clubs. No jammed streets. Just waterfalls, green hills, lakes and small villages here and there. North Bali places to visit like Munduk, Lovina and Ulun Danu Beratan are great if you want Bali to feel slow and calm for a change. Here are five spots for your list, and a few extras if you've got time.

Ulun Danu Beratan looks just like the photos. Not many places do. The temple sits right on Lake Beratan in Bedugul, with hills behind it and cool air coming off the water. The tiered shrine is what everyone wants a picture of. Then walk the gardens too, because there's more to see than people expect. And after the heat down on the coast, the cooler air is a nice change.
Things to do:
Pro Tip: Try to reach early in the morning. It is cooler and usually less busy.

Sekumpul is good if you don't mind walking. A few waterfalls pour down a green valley, with trees and hills all around. You hear the water way before you see it. The trail gets slippery after rain. Skip the cute sandals, wear proper walking shoes, and give yourself more time than you think you need.
Keep in mind:
Tiring? A little. Worth it? Yes, if you like waterfalls and being outside.

Lovina is much quieter than Kuta or Seminyak. The sand is black and volcanic. It looks odd at first, a bit like ash, but you get used to it. Most people come for the dolphin trips at sunrise. Boats leave around dawn. Dolphin sightings are natural, so they cannot really be guaranteed, but the early boat ride itself is enjoyable.
Things to do:
Pro Tip: Pick a dolphin tour that stays back and doesn't chase the animals.

Munduk is a small mountain village with forests, plantations and green hills all around. The cool weather is a big plus, mostly if you've been sweating through other parts of Bali. There are walking trails, waterfalls, coffee plantations and viewpoints nearby. Don't hurry. Stay a bit longer, have a cup of local coffee, and just sit for a while.
Munduk highlights:
If you have the time, stay overnight. It's worth it.

Banyumala is secluded, not far from Lake Buyan. Thick green leaves everywhere and two streams falling down from high rocky cliffs into a natural pool on a calm sunny day. It is not a long way to walk down, but it is. Go slow, especially after rain.
Why visit?

Got a spare day? A few more places to visit in North Bali are worth a stop.
Lake Buyan
One of Bali's twin lakes. Forest and hills wrap around it. Good for a quick break and a few photos.
Gitgit Waterfall
Near Singaraja, and a popular stop in the north. The walk is short and green, so it fits easily into a sightseeing day.
Wanagiri Hidden Hills
Great views over the twin lakes, with lots of photo spots. Easy to stop here between Bedugul and Munduk.
Need a break from Bali's busy tourist areas? North Bali tourist attractions are a good pick. Couples will like Munduk and Lovina. Families can visit the temples and viewpoints. Adventure seekers can enjoy waterfalls and trails. You can also add North Bali to Ubud, Seminyak or Uluwatu on a longer holiday. A Bali trip package can make transport and island-wide sightseeing much simpler.
When's the best time to visit North Bali? April to October. It's mostly dry then, and the weather suits waterfalls, temples, lakes and anything outdoors. June to September is usually the best stretch. Want fewer people around? Go in April-May or September-October instead. November to March is the rainy season. Trails turn soggy, and showers pop up when you least expect them.
North Bali has waterfalls, lakes, temples, mountain views and quiet beaches. Where to begin? Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Sekumpul Waterfall, Lovina Beach, Munduk and Banyumala Twin Waterfall. Those five are enough. Don't fit everything in. The roads are slow and bendy, so a day always runs longer than planned. Pick a few places and leave some free time. If you'd rather not work out the route yourself, Travel Junky can plan it for you.
The roads in North Bali twist a lot, and places are spread out. Drives take longer than you'd guess, especially in the mountains.
Pro Tip: A private car with a local driver makes life much easier, especially if you're covering a few waterfalls and mountain stops in a day.
