From Jaipur to Jaisalmer: The Perfect Playlist for Your Rajasthan Trip

Introduction

A road trip to Rajasthan isn’t complete without great music to match. The variety of places means having the perfect soundtrack for each stop will make your Jaipur to Jaisalmer trip enjoyable. Whether you’re in the bustling, vibrant city of Jaipur or looking out across the golden sands, here is what to include in your playlist.

1. Jaipur

Jaipur

A great place to start your Jaipur trip. Full of markets, historic forts and royal buildings. Be sure to visit the Hawa Mahal, which is famous for its pink exterior. Spend 2 hours in the Amber Fort, which includes some incredible courtyard areas. You’ll also be able to enjoy some shopping! Whether it be jewellery, handicrafts or bright fabrics, there is lots to choose from. Bargaining is half the fun. Although it can be busy and a bit chaotic, it will really set the tone for your playlist as the next stops will be quieter.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Ilahi – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
  • Safarnama – Tamasha
  • Khaabon Ke Parinday – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Tip: Get an early start to your sightseeing to avoid the crowds and the heat.

2. Ajmer & Pushkar

Ajmer

This is a much more peaceful place to stop. Ajmer is famous for the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. Pushkar has a holy lake, temples and peaceful streets. This is a great place to stop and enjoy some culture. Stroll around the lake in Pushkar. Walk around the small markets or simply relax in a café. It really is the opposite of Jaipur.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Kun Faya Kun – Rockstar
  • Khwaja Mere Khwaja – Jodhaa Akbar
  • Arziyan – Delhi-6

Tip: Check the times to visit religious places. Be modest at holy places.

3. Udaipur

Udaipur

Udaipur is a peaceful place with lots of lakes and grand palaces. Although it won’t be on the most direct route to Jaisalmer, it is a great place to stop for a few days. Visit the City Palace to learn about the royalty of the area and relax by Lake Pichola. If you are a fan of Bollywood, this is a great stop. Kabira makes you feel nostalgic for your friends, travels and memories. Include some softer songs as you stroll around the historic streets and lake.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Kabira – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
  • Tere Naina – My Name Is Khan
  • Iktara – Wake Up Sid

Tip: If possible stay the night here. You will need more time to visit the City Palace, Lake Pichola and the city at night.

4. Jodhpur

Jodhpur

Jodhpur is known for its blue houses, historic streets and large Mehrangarh Fort. The fort is located high up in the city and gives a fantastic view. Jaswant Thada is well worth a visit and the busy markets near the Clock Tower. Slowly walk around the historic areas. If you love taking photos this is the place for you. Try some local food, explore the handicraft shops and get slightly lost in the narrow streets.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Yun Hi Chala Chal – Swades
  • Khaabon Ke Parinday – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
  • Patakha Guddi – Highway

Tip: Visit Mehrangarh Fort in the morning or late afternoon. It can be very hot during midday.

5. Bikaner

Bikaner

Bikaner is famous for its forts, historic havelis and food. Junagarh Fort is the main attraction. It includes detailed carvings and beautifully decorated rooms. The old city has narrow streets and historic buildings to help you get a taste of its heritage. Try some Bhujia while you are here. There are plenty of snacks to try. If you aren’t a fan of the typical tourist attractions, this is a great place to add some variety to your trip.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Ghoomar – Padmaavat
  • Nagada Sang Dhol – Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela
  • Mor Bani Thanghat Kare – Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Tip: Allow time to eat and shop. Don’t schedule your entire day around sightseeing.

6. Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer

A great place to end your road trip. This place is made up of golden sandstone buildings, historic forts and an open desert. It feels completely different to the rest of the state. Visit the Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli and walk around the historic city to see the beautiful stonework. Visit Sam Sand Dunes. Take a camel ride, watch the sun set or enjoy an evening at the desert camp. As the sky begins to change, the perfect song will make it even more enjoyable.

Include these songs in your playlist:

  • Yeh Haseen Wadiyan – Roja
  • Phir Se Ud Chala – Rockstar
  • Yun Hi – Tanu Weds Manu

Tip: Choose a good desert camp to visit. Check what is included in the price, such as food, cultural shows and transport.

Add Rajasthani Folk Music to Your Playlist

Although Bollywood music is great for road trips, you should also include some local music. Folk music will give you a local feel and help you connect to the culture. Ensure you look for songs in the Manganiyar and Langa traditions. These have powerful vocals and traditional instruments. Search for kamaicha, khartal and dholak music. As you drive around the villages or relax at the desert camp, this will feel completely different from your usual Bollywood playlist. It will make your trip feel more like Rajasthan.

Tip: Download your playlist so you have it available offline. Mobile signal can be unreliable in rural areas.
